Who We Are and What We Believe

Who We Are:

About Pillar of Love:

Pillar of Love Fellowship United Church Of Christ, was started in 2003 in a Chicago suburb (Summit also known as Argo) that is a “stone’s throw” from the southwest border of the city of Chicago.  Pillar

(Pillar of Love Fellowship Church (POLFC) was started while Bishop Phyllis was completing her

Master of Divinity degree at Chicago Theological Seminary.  Although she had been an “out” lesbian for over 30 years and POLFC was specifically organized and targeted to meet the spiritual needs and to fill the void of the LGBTQ community in general and the African American LGBTQ community specifically, Bishop Phyllis could not ignore the incredible needs of the hungry, homeless and addicted of her native community.  So, in 2003, she “set up shop” in this small, suburban community to which she was born and raised.

Though Bishop Phyllis’ intent was to create a community that served the needs of the LGBTQ community, as a bi-racial woman of an African American mother and an Italian immigrant father, her complete vision was for a community that welcomes and embraces EVERYONE.  Bishop Phyllis believes that her life as a bi-racial woman who lives her life on a daily basis as a Black woman, and her life as a lesbian, same gender loving woman reflects the fact that she was created by God to be a bridge to ALL people.

You are invited to come and share in the vision of a radically diverse and powerfully loving community of people of faith that nurtures and supports the gifts of LGBTQ people of faith and our heterosexual allies.

We invite you to come help us at Pillar of Love Fellowship United Church Of Christ to be a vehicle for all people of faith to answer their call to ministry and to have a place to bring and develop their spiritual gifts.

Our worship services are at 11:00am at

7438 West 62nd Place in Summit, IL. 60501

which is 10 minutes west of Midway Airport.

Pillar of Love Fellowship United Church Of Christ was officially received and granted standing by the Chicago Metropolitan Association of the Illinois Conference of the United Church Of Christ in May of 2009.

Pillar of Love Fellowship United Church Of Christ remains an affiliate of Refuge Ministries and

The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries (TFAM) under the leadership of Bishop Yvette A. Flunder.

Exodus 13:21,22

21)The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night. 22)Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

John 4:7,8

7)Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8)Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.

The purpose of Pillar of Love Fellowship United Church Of Christ (POLFUCC)  is to increase personal awareness of the receptivity to the grace of God so that it will be internalized. To that end, the purpose for which Pillar of Love Fellowship (POLFUCC) was established is to help each individual develop a personal love relationship with God so that God's love for us will be internalized. Pillar of Love Fellowship United Church Of Christ (POLFUCC)  seeks to motivate each individual to receive and then to reciprocate God's love, thereby, yielding each individual with a desire to love self and to love all God's created humanity as one loves themselves.
